Public safety warning for operators of both active and disused quarries prior to Easter Holidays | As we approach the Easter break and school holidays, MPA is requesting members to be extra vigilant and for quarry operators to review their public safety risk assessments and any site-specific, mitigation measures such as fencing and warning signs.
With the unusually wet weather experienced across the UK, water levels are higher than normal, currents stronger in waterways, most inland water bodies are still very cold, paths and banks are muddy and unstable, making slips and falls by pedestrians more likely. These conditions increase the potential for members of the public entering quarries to put themselves at risk of falling over faces or into water.

Fatal 1 - TRANSPORT - Disconnecting hoses whilst still under pressure - Eurobitume Guidance Oct 2023 |
Occasionally, a bitumen delivery which has commenced cannot be completed for a number of reasons. When this happens, the weight of the remaining bitumen in the truck trailer puts pressure on the hose and this poses a safety risk for uncoupling.
Eurobitume has developed a new guidance document, ‘Recommendations to disconnect hoses in case still under pressure’, which shares good industry practises about how to safely disconnect hoses when a delivery is incomplete.
This new guidance document is available in English, German and French

Potential risks of Hydrogen Sulphide through the manufacture and delivery process - Eurobitume Guidance |
Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) is naturally present in crude oils and can be formed during refining and when hot bitumen is in storage and transportation tanks.
To help people throughout the bitumen supply chain safely manage the risks associated with handling bitumen in the presence of H2S, Eurobitume has updated its comprehensive guidance document, ‘Potential risks of Hydrogen Sulphide through the manufacture and delivery process’, to incorporate the latest industry information.
Updated H2S Cards
In addition to the guidance, handy ‘H2S in Bitumen Emissions’ cards, available in multiple languages, can be downloaded from the PUBLICATIONS / Documents page of the Eurobitume website.
The cards identify and summarise the main hazards associated with H2S in bitumen emissions, the likely exposure scenarios and potential risks.
These resources help organisations and individuals comply with their responsibilities during the loading, delivery, storage, transport and use of bitumen products.

TRANSPORT - FATAL 2 & 6 - MYSPACE - pre-delivery safety checks | A recent incident alert, that involved the rollover of a readymix truck, highlighted a number of common causes / driver errors associated with rollovers. One of them was
- Not carrying out a MYSAFE assessment, taking the time to scan the jobsite prior to positioning for discharge.
Following publication of the incident alert, more information has been requested about the MYSPACE system developed by CEMEX , it is a checklist for drivers prior to delivery.
A PowerPoint about MYSPACE and the checklist form have now been added to the toolbox talks on Safequarry.
The system is also referenced on page 26 of the MPA's Drivers Handbook. See below
