WHAT HAPPENED
Crack found on CAT 771D Dumper.
The crack was identified when the dumper was in the fitting shop having a tyre changed. A maintenance contractor was called in to make the necessary repairs, when the welder gouged out the crack it became clear that there was no backing plate behind the crack. There should have been a 4 inch plate each side of the crack to support the weld. The findings have been passed on to Finnings and an explanation requested.
