Operatives hand injured during planing operation

ACCIDENT / INCIDENT DETAILS
An operative was carrying out his duties on-site as a planer banksman. Whilst the asphalt planings were being conveyed into a lorry, a piece of breakout asphalt (weighing approximately 2.4kg) bounced off the side of the lorry and struck the operative. He suffered a small cut to his right-hand index finger just above the knuckle. Immediately after the incident, the following actions were taken.
- Planing operation was stopped
- Injured person received first aid
- Site supervisor and management team informed of incident
- IP later attended hospital for medical assessment
- SHEQ representative contacted for further advice

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN
The following actions are now being taken
- Full investigation to be conducted by the Surfacing Divisions (assisted by the SHEQ Department) with all relevant documentation provided to Central Services.
- Workforce to be informed to keep danger zones free and clear of persons, maintaining visibility at all times and to heighten awareness.
- Review of possible safety protection systems to control hazard e.g. falling debris
