TITLE
Operatives hand injured during planing operation
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

WHAT HAPPENED

An operative was carrying out his duties on-site as a planer banksman. Whilst the asphalt planings were being conveyed into a lorry, a piece of breakout asphalt (weighing approximately 2.4kg) bounced off the side of the lorry and struck the operative. He suffered a small cut to his right-hand index finger just above the knuckle. Immediately after the incident, the following actions were taken.

  •  Planing operation was stopped
  • Injured person received first aid
  • Site supervisor and management team informed of incident
  • IP later attended hospital for medical assessment
  • SHEQ representative contacted for further advice

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN

The following actions are now being taken

  1. Full investigation to be conducted by the Surfacing Divisions (assisted by the SHEQ Department) with all relevant documentation provided to Central Services.
  2. Workforce to be informed to keep danger zones free and clear of persons, maintaining visibility at all times and to heighten awareness.
  3.  Review of possible safety protection systems to control hazard e.g. falling debris
