The Value Of Well Maintained Safety Devices

ACCIDENT / INCIDENT DETAILS
The true value of having well maintained edge protection, Roll Over Protection Systems (ROPS) and using Seatbelts was proven during a recent incident at a quarry.

While working on a muckshift operation a contractors dumper lost control while descending a steep section of haul road. The dumper ran up the haul road edge protection bunds a number of times and in each case the bund did exactly what it was designed to do in steering the dumper back on to the haul road.

Unfortunately the driver was unable to regain control and the dumper eventually jack knifed causing the front of the dumper to rotate through 270 degrees and the whole vehicle came to rest facing back up the hill down which it had just descended. Despite this the driver freed himself from the vehicle.
