WHAT HAPPENED

Stay Safe Campaign - Keep children safe from our site activities

(Editors note: Issued by the company concerned before the summer holidays commenced):

If not already, most schools will break up for the summer holidays in the coming week and we need to act now to ensure our sites are as safe as reasonably practical should children decide to see them as play areas.

During a recent spell of vandalism at a working quarry, the trespassers negotiated a vertical ladder, even though it was guarded to the landing. Once there they rode in the additives bucket via the electrically operated winch. The winch is now isolated when not in use.

Guarded Ladder

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN

Ensure that all air and electrically operated equipment is isolated when not in use so that the local controls are ineffective. This is especially important at weekends and during school holidays where the local population is in close proximity to the site / plant.

Responsible Managers / Supervisors should conduct a complete check of their site to ensure that it is as safe as we can reasonably make it. The perimeter fence must be intact with appropriate signage that is suitable for the risks present on site.
