A haulier at a coating plant recently had an accident when he drove his tipper into an overhead conveyor. He had just dumped a rejected load and was manoeuvring whilst the vehicle body was being lowered.

He was thrown forward and his stomach and face impacted with the steering wheel, causing minor abrasions to his face and bruising to his stomach

Damage to ram

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN
This incident highlights several issues:

• HAD HE BEEN WEARING HIS SEATBELT HE WOULD NOT HAVE STRUCK HIS STEERING WHEEL

• HAD HE WAITED UNTIL THE BODY WAS FULLY LOWERED HE WOULD NOT HAVE STRUCK THE CONVEYOR

• WEARING SEATBELTS IS MANDATORY ON ALL HANSON SITES AND LEGALLY REQUIRED ON PUBLIC ROADS

The driver in question never believed it would happen to him and has now changed his attitude to the wearing of seatbelts.

He could not work for a week, as his vehicle required a complete new ram.
