FINALIST - Safer maintenance
At Blue Phoenix’s processing plant for incinerated bottom ash in Tilbury, the impact crusher is cleaned every night at the end of production. This exposes the operator’s to three significant hazards.
- Falling from height – Operatives straddled a 3ft gap with a 3ft fall to clean parts of the equipment.
- Falling from height – To open the crusher operatives had to undo a securing bolt at the top of the crusher. This meant using a step ladder and leaning over to reach the bolt.
- Rotating parts – Although the equipment was electrically isolated the rotor had a pin that could be inserted to prevent the rotor from turning by hand. This pin however could fall out as there was no way to secure it in position.
Please view video of how the risk from these hazards were reduced or eliminated.
