Vertically slotted bitumen flange |
Following an 8 tonne bitumen spill, CEMEX Aggregates (Eastern) set about reducing the risk by redesign of the then standard horizontally-slotted oval shape. The hinged action of the flange bolts on the armoured flexi-hose make them susceptible to splaying outwards when tightened. The remedy utilises vertical slots in the flange at the standard hole centres, thus entrapping the bolts within the flange itself. The backs of these new flanges are also countersunk at the terminations of the slots to accommodate the convex-shaped contact edge to the nuts, to enhance security still further.
