Safe maintenance of silo alarms |
The three silos on the M1 mobile plant were supplied with check points for the High Level alarms. To check that the alarms are working T-bars are placed down pipes that run adjacent to the alarms. The bar stops the rotation of the paddle on the alarm and activates the warning siren and lights.
The pipes had screw caps fitted when they were not in use. It was noted that the caps were difficult to turn by hand and required an operative having to position themselves on their knees and to remove the cap with a wrench. There was a concern that whilst working on their knees they could become unbalanced which could lead to a fall as there was only a small protective rail.
A small T-Bar was positioned on top of the cap which ensures the operative can achieve leverage and can open the cap whilst standing. This has created a safer working environment. |
