Breedon’s Ashwood Dale Quarry has one entrance road which has blind bends, single tracked lanes and a mixture of vehicle types traveling on it. The limestone quarry typically sells circa 3 thousand tonnes per day which is all delivered by road transport. This equates to over 150 HGV’s per day mixed in with other vehicles entering and leaving the site. As there was no control over these vehicle movements, there were a number of near misses, where incoming and exiting HGV’s met upon a steep inclined single tracked lane, requiring wagons to reverse with no banksman.
A complaint was made by a regular HGV driver, highlighting the risks associated with the heavy usage of the road with no controls in place. The road could not be widened.
Please watch the video to see the traffic light control system that Breedon put in place to mitigate these risks. The additional pdf shows more images of the access road.
