Topic 4 - Highly Commended
Hanson concrete have opened a new flagship site in Birmingham. To reduce the need for additional road traffic in West Midlands the plant design and location centred around arrogate supply to the plant being by rail.
The site on Landor Street is leased from Freightliner and upon site inspection we noted there was a pedestrian walkway that ran the length of the track sidings that Freightliner we’re using to gain access to the shunting locomotive at the opposite end of the site.
Upon installation of our concrete site, it was clear that there would be a high risk of Freightliner operatives completing trackside operations coming into contact with our aggregate grab wagon operations – particularly as the volume of throughput increased.
Freightliner have a well-established workers union that we’re involved in reviewing site and worker health safety and wellbeing. They judged that in its existing state the walkway would not be a safe means of traversing the site for their operatives, however avoidance of its use was not reasonably practicable.
No rail offloads we completed until a safe means of using the pedestrian walkway and completing rail side aggregate offloading could be established.
