TITLE
Bitumen Burns caused by Slip Trip Fall
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
WHAT HAPPENED
Whilst carrying out work sealing joints with hot pour, an operative received burns to his right forearm following a trip on some break out material.
The Injured Party (IP) involved in the incident had safely poured three cans of hot pour to joints, When he had filled the fourth can, he stepped back from the pickup and lost his footing. This made him drop the can of hot bitumen which resulted in bitumen spilling up his right arm Hi-Vis sleeve and into the gauntlet.
The IP was given First Aid on site and was at Hospital within 30 minutes of the incident occurring. The IP was treated for his injuries and sent home.
The IP was deemed as competent to carry out the task and had been issued with P.P.E including gauntlets that reached half way up his forearm.

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN
Ensure all activities are fully planned and, if hazards are identified, control measures must be reviewed.
Always consider using alternative method of sealing joints i.e. cold pour. If this is not an option, the following should be considered;
- Where hot pour operations are undertaken a Permit to Work must be issued detailing the correct procedure to be followed, including competent operative deployed and full P.P.E. requirements.
- Ensure the correct P.P.E. is available and worn at all times, this must include gauntlets that protect the entire arms and / or Kevlar sleeves and Gauntlets.
- Ensure the work area is kept clean and tidy and ensure the work area is adequately lit in hours of darkness.
