TITLE
Over-Turned Vibratory Roller
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
WHAT HAPPENED
During routine site operations ; a Bomag 135 (small tandem vibratory roller) was being driven along a small country lane to collect water from a standpipe. The lane was narrow, cambered and with steep undulations, there was also an area of super elevation.
As the roller was being driven along one of these super elevated sections, one of the rolls lost contact with the road surface causing it to traverse down the lane. As it did so, it began gathering soil from the verge into the rear drum - to such an extent that it over turned the machine - with the operator still on board.
The operator was saved from serious injury due to two key safety devices.
- the seat belt prevented him from falling from the seat and underneath the roller.
- the ROPS (Roll Over Protection System) was in place protecting the machine from rolling completely over and protected the operators upper body and head.
