Slip on Concrete Site
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
WHAT HAPPENED
A contractor recently received a serious injury at a concrete site when he slipped on some cement slurry. This caused him to fall onto his hydraulic equipment resulting in him fracturing his knee cap. Substantial surgery was required to repair the injury.
Slips, trips and falls are the largest cause of accidents in the UK, and poor housekeeping is one of the main contributors. The injury could have been prevented if the area had been cleaned of all spillages.

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN
The company is experiencing an increase not only in the number of incidents but also the severity of injuries received. Action must be taken, and the following recommendations are endorsed by the Managing Director.
• Ensure all staff hold Health & Safety awareness as their main priority.
• Weekly 15 minute site meetings are to be held to discuss current health & safety issues and to reinforce awareness.
• All spillages must be cleared effectively and efficiently around all areas of the plant.
• Never walk past a hazard without taking action to remove the hazard if you can, warn others and report the situation to someone who can make the situation safe.
• All Contractors must be fully inducted
• Contractors do not begin their task without the completed permission to proceed.
•Extra supervision is required for new contractors
• Contact the Health & Safety Department for further advice on preventing slips, trips and falls this winter.
