LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN
The Kiln Bearing Heat Shields are the original F.L. Smidth covers that fit very closely to the kiln bearings. Although this type of asbestos represents a lower risk than other asbestos types, it should not be disturbed.
Advice has been taken and it is likely that this material will require removal by a specialist company and the various options are being considered.
A number of precautionary actions have been taken:
1) All of the four beds on the kiln have been taped off, with signs stating that access should not be made. These areas will be further restricted by the erection of scaffold barriers.
2) The heat covers from number 5 tyre have been covered over with bags to contain any material. A scaffold protection frame will be installed over the weekend to protect these from being struck.
3) Site personnel and contractors have been informed
(Where heat resistant covers do not have to be removed, the company has been advised that access will be acceptable to replace the oil in a bearing for example).
