WHAT HAPPENED
An accident occurred recently where a door, which was not secured fell onto an Operative who was cleaning out a blockage. The industrial vacuum cleaner unit is found on many sites and is an invaluable tool to reduce dust and manual handling. It can however, if not correctly used, cause injury.
The Operative involved was struck on the neck and shoulder when the door shown fell. He suffered minor bruising and returned to work after 1 day off through injury.

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN
This accident highlights the following issues:
• Access hatches and doors that are not secured can pose potential risks if they fall or blow closed.
• This is a form of stored energy, which is rarely considered.
• Had he not been wearing his safety helmet, his injuries could have been far worse.
• A suitable Safe Working Practice is required for all maintenance tasks
