TITLE
Incident involving theft of keys from tipper lorry
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
WHAT HAPPENED
An incident occurred at Stratford Premix recently, when a Tipper driver delivering aggregates left his vehicle running and the cab insecure as he got the Site Supervisor to sign his delivery note. Whilst away from the vehicle, a local youth jumped into the cab and stole the ignition keys, some cash and the drivers licence. He was pursued but managed to get away with his ill gotten gains.

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN
This incident highlights the following issues:
• Vehicles should never be left unattended with an insecure cab when the engine is running.
• Had the youth been attempting to steal the vehicle, people could well have been injured had the youth not been able to control the vehicle adequately.
• Drivers insurance will not cover vehicles left in an insecure state, especially when the keys are left in the ignition.
• If a vehicle has to be left with the engine running, a spare set of keys should be used to lock the cab to prevent unauthorised entry.
